RNC Chairman Joe Gruters said Democrats are opposed to the SAVE America Act because they want to cheat in elections by expanding illegal voting, a charge he made the crux of his Friday morning appearance on Newsmax’s “National Report.”
Gruters said the Republican National Committee is fully aligned with President Donald Trump’s push for the bill, stressing, “We’re 100% behind the president.”
“We’re encouraging, we’re working behind the scenes, doing everything we can to encourage this to move forward,” he said.
But with recent statistics showing that 83% of Americans are in favor of photo voter ID, Gruters asked why Democrats are fighting the legislation at all.
“The real question is, why are the Democrats opposing it when the overwhelming majority of Americans out there support this?” he said.
According to Gruters, the answer lies in what he described as a long-term Democrat strategy to permanently alter the electorate.
“They’re trying to fundamentally change the country,” he said. “Remember when Joe Biden was president, he had almost 30 million illegals through the southern borders and into our country illegally.
“What they're trying to do is they're trying to have these illegals vote,” Gruters added, arguing that Democrats are seeking to create a new, reliable voting bloc.
He said that push is driven by Republican success with voters nationwide, which he credited to Trump and GOP policy positions.
“Over the last four or five years, Republicans, because of the president and his policies, have absolutely dominated,” Gruters said.
He highlighted voter registration as a key indicator, saying Republicans are “making gains in all 30 states that track voter registration.”
With those gains accelerating, Gruters said Democrats see limited options ahead.
“The Democrats know this, and they know the only way they could win is to cheat,” he said.
Gruters said that belief explains Democrat resistance to the SAVE America Act, which would tighten election safeguards and require proof of citizenship to vote in federal elections.
“And that’s why they don’t want this to pass,” he said, reiterating that opposition to the bill is about political survival, not public opinion.
Gruters emphasized that support for the legislation cuts across party lines.
“The overwhelming majority of Americans – Democrats, Republicans – they’re all in favor of it,” he said.
Toward the end of the interview, Gruters also looked ahead to 2028, saying he hopes former Vice President Kamala Harris runs for president again on the Democrat ticket.
“She’s the gift that keeps on giving,” he said, predicting Harris’ candidacy in the next presidential election cycle would help Republicans deliver “another absolutely crushing win” for the GOP.
