The 110-page brief filed Monday by President Donald Trump's legal team was "spectacular" and will help convince Republican senators of the need to conduct the impeachment trial quickly, Joe diGenova, the former U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, told Newsmax TV on Monday.
"I think [Mitch] McConnell's going to do everything he can within his power to prevent witnesses," diGenova told "The Howie Carr Show," adding that people are worried about what a handful of Republican senators might do.
But the brief will go a long way toward convincing Republican senators that "this travesty has to end quickly, two weeks tops, at the most," DiGenova said.
In the brief, Trump's legal team insisted he did "absolutely nothing wrong," while urging the Senate to reject the "flimsy" case against him quickly, calling it a "dangerous perversion of the Constitution."
DiGenova added he thinks McConnell, the Senate Majority Leader, will hold 12-hour-a-day sessions that will start at 1 p.m. ET and "they're gonna go all night" until 1 a.m. ET because other Senate business needs to be done in the mornings to run the country, "something the Democrats really don't care about."
DiGenova also predicted there will be a few Democrats, such as Sen. Doug Jones, D-Ala., of Alabama and Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., who might vote with party lines on witnesses, but will "probably vote to acquit" Trump in the end.
Jones is seeking re-election in a tough fight, pointed out diGenova, but Manchin is not. However, if the West Virginia lawmaker votes to convict Trump, "he will never be elected to anything" in his state again.
