Florida Lt. Gov. Jeannette Nuñez on Thursday blamed an uptick in positive coronavirus cases in her state on increased testing and said she was confident the GOP could hold the Republican National Convention in Jacksonville this August.
"I think if you remember in early March, it was almost impossible to get a test unless you traveled internationally or unless you were a healthcare worker," Nuñez, the Chair of the Re-Open Florida Task Force Committee, said during an appearance on Newsmax TV's "Greg Kelly Reports."
"Gov. (Ron) DeSantis' priority from day one was to expand testing, and we've seen that occur here in Florida. We've tested more than 1.5 million Floridians."
Nuñez also said the state has tested communities that were not previously tested, and there has been an uptick in positive cases among agricultural workers.
Florida has 85,926 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 3,061 deaths.
President Donald Trump will accept the Republican nomination with a speech Aug. 27 in Jacksonville after it was pulled from its original location in Charlotte, North Carolina.
"We're excited showcasing one of our cities here in Florida," Nuñez told host Greg Kelly. "I think that we'll be able to put together a good plan. I know a lot of people are going to work, from the RNC on down, to make sure Floridians are safe."
