By    |   Wednesday, 29 October 2014 01:57 PM EDT

"The Real Housewives of New Jersey" star Jacqueline Laurita tells Newsmax that it's important that parents with autistic children never give up fighting for them, even though not everything will work.

"Don't get discouraged," Laurita told J.D. Hayworth and Francesca Page on "America's Forum" on Newsmax TV on Wednesday.

"If one thing doesn't work, try something else," she said. "Seek success stories from other families who have overcome a lot of the obstacles.

"Believe that even though there is no known cure for autism, that with the right early interventions, treatments and therapies, many kids can recover [from] a lot of the signs and symptoms of autism," she explained. "Keep pushing."

Laurita's son, Nicholas, was diagnosed with autism in 2012.

She said the hardest part is seeing him "getting frustrated when [he's] trying to get [his] words out or communicate and interacting with [his] peers."

But she added that he "is making a lot of progress. It's slow progress, but as long as it's progress, we're happy."
