Zuhdi Jasser: Jihadists Use Peaceful Month of Ramadan for Terror

By    |   Thursday, 02 Jul 2015 07:34 PM

Ramadan, the Islamic month of fasting, is a time of atonement for most Muslims — but terror-plotting jihadists use it as an excuse to attack the West, says Dr. Zuhdi Jasser, president of the American Islamic Forum for Democracy and retired U.S. Navy lieutenant commander.

"If you ask rational, pious Muslims, we can't explain it. As somebody who's fasting daily, you look for introspection. It's a time for atonement. It's a time for looking within itself and repair," Jasser said Thursday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"However, for the jihadists, for these movements of hundreds of millions of Muslims that are part of a militant, evangelical forceful movement, if you will, they look upon Ramadan as a time for jihad."

He said the Islamic State (ISIS) is adamantly calling for such violence.

"ISIS specifically is calling for [it] … They claim that the way to become the most pious in this holy month of fasting is to commit an act against the infidel, against the enemies of Islam," Jasser said.

"You look at the three fronts that were attacked last Friday … in the land of the infidels in Paris … [in] a Shiite mosque in Kuwait who they view as heretics and non-Sunnis, non-Muslims, and … in Tunisia, which is sort of an aspiring secular democracy where the Islamist party was defeated.

"Now they're really calling for this global jihad and Ramadan really pushes those buttons."

Jasser is author of "A Battle for the Soul of Islam: An American Muslim Patriots Fight to Save His Faith," published by Threshold Editions.
