New Republic Editor: Today's Racism Rooted in Slavery

Thursday, 22 May 2014 04:43 PM EDT

Nineteenth-century slavery in the United States is responsible for the roots of many of the nation's racial problems today, says Isaac Chotiner, a liberal senior editor at the New Republic.

"When you live in a society that has a long, long history of slavery and then a long history of segregation and a long history of discrimination after that, yes, it breeds societal problems," Chotiner told "The Steve Malzberg Show'' on Newsmax TV.

And more must be done to combat the discrimination that still exists, he believes.

Story continues below video.

"We could take larger societal steps to stop the types of discrimination that occur today," he said.

"For example, housing discrimination, which has been a big part of the financial crisis … [Banks have] settled for hundreds of millions of dollars … for discriminating against people in giving housing loans."

In addition, police brutality against minorities, and underfunding of schools in minority areas also must be remedied, he said.
