The Obama administration is more worried about a potential Israeli strike against Iran's nuclear weapons program than it is about Iran getting a nuclear weapon, says former U.N. Ambassador John Bolton.
"There's simply no other way to explain the overall negotiation strategy that the administration has been following, let alone the specifics of the deal they came very close to agreeing to in Geneva," Bolton said Tuesday on Fox News Channel's
"The Kelly File."
Israel carried out air strikes against nuclear facilities in Iraq in 1981 and in Syria in 2007. Israel sees itself as a main target of nuclear-armed Middle East countries with radical Islamic leadership.
The United States was on the verge of a deal to ease sanctions on Iran Saturday when France, one of the six countries involved in talks,
threw a wrench into the plan, calling it a "fool's bargain."
Iran wants relief from the sanctions so they can sell oil and generate revenue, Bolton said, but it has done nothing to slow down its nuclear enrichment program. Any concessions Iran has made have been "insignificant," Bolton said.
If sanctions were lifted, he said, it would be "very hard for Europe and the United States to torque those sanctions back up again."
