The Justice Department's order to its Inspector General to probe allegations the FBI spied on the Trump campaign for political reasons is a toothless maneuver and an excuse "to do nothing," former federal prosecutor Larry Klayman told Newsmax TV.
Klayman, founder of the government watchdog Freedom Watch, said the Inspector General's office does not have the power to call a grand jury even if it concludes there was wrongdoing.
As well, such a probe will likely drag on long after special counsel Robert Mueller's probe of the Trump campaign concludes, he said.
"They don't have the teeth . . . The damage to the president and this country will have been done," Klayman told hosts Miranda Khan, John Cardillo, and Gina Loudon on Tuesday's "America Talks Live."
"This is an excuse by [Jeff Sessions], a compromised attorney general, and his deputy, who is also compromised, [Rod] Rosenstein to do nothing. It's like burying it and putting it nowhere."
