President Donald Trump should ignore the 1997 federal court decision limiting the amount of time children of immigrants illegally crossing the border can be separated from their families, former Republican House Majority Leader Tom DeLay told Newsmax TV on Tuesday.
"I wish he wouldn’t do it but President Trump is adhering to what is called the 'Flores consent decree' which says you can’t hold children for more than 20 days," Delay said Tuesday on Newsmax TV’s “The Brett Winterble Show.”

The Flores case stems from a 1985 lawsuit filed in 1985 by Jenny Lisette Flores, an immigrant girl who was detained by immigration agents in poor conditions and who was not allowed to be released to an aunt.
“That is an activist ruling and Trump should be ignoring that ruling, putting families together when you can and providing detention centers for families, but at the same time ignore the ruling and hold these people until their cases are adjudicated."
He said the 20-day rule allowed for the "catch and release" of immigrants, which activists want.
"Through 'catch and release' we now have millions of illegals here in the U.S. Trump is trying to shut down this catch and release and actually catch people and deport them out of the country and he’s having to fight the judiciary, too," DeLay said.
DeLay is the author of "Revival! Revolution! Rebirth!: A Radical Call from the Former Majority Leader of the United States House of Representatives," written with Wallace Henley and published by WND Books.
