The World Health Organization congratulated China on its response to the spread of coronavirus, while criticizing the United States for how it handled the pandemic, according to Rep. Guy Reschenthaler, R-Pa. on Newsmax TV.
"What did this World Health Organization do? Instead of keeping the world safe, it was either grossly negligent, or it was working hand and glove with the Chinese Communist Party," Reschenthaler said on Wednesday's "The Chris Salcedo Show."
"We know that Taiwan warned the WHO back in December that this virus was passed human to human, yet the World Health Organization parroted the Chinese talking point that it did not pass human to human"
He pointed to a University of Southampton study that showed coronavirus infections could've been reduced by up to 90% if China had performed interventions such as early detection, isolation of cases and travel restrictions just three weeks sooner.
"We're just under $800 million that we fund the World Health Organization. That makes up about 22% of there entire budget," Reschenthaler said
On Tuesday, President Donald Trump threatened to halt funding to WHO. House Democrats said that doing so would hurt the global response to the coronavirus pandemic.
They also said the money to WHO was already appropriated by Congress, hinting at a potential court battle if the president stops funding.
Reschenthaler thinks many of the Democrats are "apologists" for China, in putting politics over health.
"The Democrats are just engaged in playing partisan politics and political games, because they will do anything to attack this president, even if it means siding with the Chinese communist party," Reschenthaler said
