Rep. Guy Reschenthaler, R-Penn., on Thursday told Newsmax TV that passing a “Green New Deal” would “put an anchor on the economy” when it’s at a vulnerable point due to the coronavirus outbreak.
“Newsmax Now” host John Bachman asked the congressman if he thought Democrats in Congress were trying to push for a Green New Deal bill now because former Vice President Joe Biden, the front-runner for the Democratic presidential nomination, has been sidelined because he’s retreated to his home in Delaware during the outbreak.
Reschenthaler described a Green New Deal as “delusional and disingenuous,” adding that Biden is “trying to shore-up the left flank of his base,” with supporters of Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt.
“What’s so dangerous about what they’re suggesting is that it would actually put an anchor on the economy, it would weigh the economy down as we’re trying to help it out,” he said, adding that Democrats “wanted to have cap and trade, which would really hurt U.S. manufacturing and U.S. industry, they also wanted to have the airlines have these fuel efficiency standards that were completely unattainable. Here’s an industry that is really struggling, they can barely keep planes in the air because they’re running at a loss, and they want to do something with their fuel efficiency standards? It’s truly mind-boggling.”
