Rep. Greg Steube, R-Fla., told Newsmax TV on Thursday that “there’s still an incredible amount of reform” needed at the Department of Veterans Affairs despite the passing of the VA Reporting Transparency Act.
Steube explained that the bill, which passed the House on Feb. 25, will “allow every member of the public to see what these reports are, so, it would require the VA to put these reports on their website, and if their reports are on the website open to all the people in the public, it gives Americans and every citizen of our country the ability to see what's really going on, and reports that congress has required the VA to give to us, so that every citizen can see what's going on internally in the VA.”
The congressman added “there’s still an incredible amount of reform that we need to do in the VA,” and noted that he wants to “build on” the MISSION Act, which provides veterans with better access to healthcare in VA facilities. He said, “what I think we should do is allow veterans true choice, so, if you're over that 30% service, you get Tricare for life, you have the ability to make that choice if you want to go to the VA hospital in your community.”
Steube also addressed Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and his recent comments about Supreme Court Justices Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch, in which he said they will “pay the price” for their “awful decisions.”
The congressman said that Schumer should “apologize to the American people, and specifically” to Gorsuch and Kavanaugh “for basically trying to incite violence against them.”
The senator said on Thursday that he misspoke, according to CNN, but did not directly apologize, accusing Republicans of “manufacturing outrage.”
