Most Americans know of the incredible heroics of the Doolittle Raiders, the Midway Codebreakers, the Tuskegee Airmen, the Band of Brothers, the Flying Tigers, the Monuments Men, and the Iwo Jima flag-raisers. But just as gutsy and death-defying were the men they called "The Davao Dozen."
On April 4, 1943, 10 American prisoners-of-war and two Filipino convicts broke out of the Davao Penal Colony, an escape-proof Imperial Japanese Army prison plantation in the Philippines. Called "The Greatest Story of the War in the Pacific" by the U.S. War Department in 1944, this astonishing, yet true action-adventure tale is told through the eyes of Lt. Col. William Edwin Dyess, one of World War II's most dynamic military leaders.
Known as the "One-Man Scourge of the Japanese," this swashbuckling fighter pilot from Texas dueled with enemy planes in aerial combat, led America's first amphibious landing of the war, and survived the infamous Bataan Death March. And, after nearly a year in enemy captivity, Dyess helped lead the only large-scale POW escape of the Pacific War.
Dyess would later spearhead a top secret fight against the wartime censorship of the U.S. government to break the news of Japan’s atrocities to the world — all before his tragic death in a plane crash at the age of 27. He was the 2015 recipient of the prestigious Texas Legislative Medal of Honor.
Shot with high-definition cameras in the continental U.S., Hawaii, and the Philippines, "4-4-43" features archival WWII footage and photographs, captured enemy combat film, stunning aerial photography and special effects, and intimate interviews with surviving veterans. It includes the only on-camera interview in existence with the last surviving Davao escapee, Fort Worth, Texas, native Jack Hawkins.
This riveting production is narrated by Hollywood actor and U.S. Marine Corps veteran Dale Dye ("Saving Private Ryan," "Band of Brothers").
An educational, entertaining, and epic documentary, "4-4-43" — based upon the bestselling book "Escape From Davao: The Forgotten Story of the Most Daring Prison Break of the Pacific War" by John D. Lukacs — is a quintessential American tale of fate, faith, heroism, and inspirational triumph over long odds. And one you won’t want to miss!
