Peace to Israel will only come through a two-state solution with the Palestinians — and the United States "is and will be a central figure in what occurs in not only this conflict but in the other conflicts raging in the Middle East as well," former Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell told Newsmax TV on Tuesday.
"A two-state solution remains the only credible and viable possibility of achieving an agreement between the two sides," Mitchell, 83, who represented Maine and served as Senate Democratic leader from 1989 to 1995, told "Newsmax Prime" host J.D. Hayworth.
"The way to achieve that is through direct negotiation between the parties with full participation, support and assistance by the United States and others who may wish to assist."

Mitchell wrote the new book, "A Path to Peace: A Brief History of Israeli-Palestinian Negotiations and a Way Forward in the Middle East," with Alon Sachar.
He said President Barack Obama should give his assessment of the conflict and his views on a two-state solution before he leaves office in January, as did Presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton.
Obama's two predecessors "made statements regarding their assessment of the situation and their hope for the future," Mitchell told Hayworth.
"They were not binding on the successors, but each of them has achieved a status — in particular the Clinton statement, which goes by the name now of the Clinton parameters — which many people in the region and around the world look to as at least in general terms an outline of how this much be brought to a successful conclusion.
"I believe President Obama should provide his assessment of the situation in that context."
