John Fund: Obama Appeasing His Base With Ferguson Summit

Thursday, 04 Dec 2014 01:35 PM

President Barack Obama's summit on the aftermath of Ferguson is a bid to appease his liberal base following a grand jury's clearing of Police Officer Darren Wilson, Newsmax contributor and National Review columnist John Fund says.

"That summit basically was saying to the liberal community, we’re not going to be able to have the stuff to go after him on a civil rights violation on the federal government's side, that's an enormously high bar to clear," Fund told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"[Obama] is trying to back out of this, politically. But what he should be doing is exercising leadership — and he can't do that because his base won't let him."

The grand jury decided not to press criminal charges against Darren, a white police officer, in his fatal shooting of black teen Michael Brown — an incident that sparked weeks of racial unrest in Ferguson, Missouri.

Fund — author of "Obama's Enforcer: Eric Holder's Justice Department," written with Hans von Spakovsky and published by Broadside Books — said the president is shaping a notorious legacy with his alliance with the Rev. Al Sharpton.

"One of the worst legacies that Barack Obama will have is during his administration, he made Al Sharpton the nation's leading civil rights leader," Fund said.

"That is appalling and a step backwards. Al Sharpton's slogan isn't 'I Have a Dream,' it's "I Have a Scheme."
