Dr. Erika Schwartz: Signs of Heart Disease Different in Women

By    |   Tuesday, 11 March 2014 08:31 PM EDT

Heart disease remains the No. 1 killer of women — and its symptoms can be quite different than those of men, according to Dr. Erika Schwartz, a leading expert in wellness, disease prevention, and hormone therapies.

"The problem is all the studies are done on men and women are perceived as little men. But we're not .… We have different hormones. We operate differently," Schwartz told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

Story continues below video.

“Women show up with symptoms that are very different for heart attacks.… Women die of heart disease much more than they die of breast cancer or any other disease."

Among the telltale signs of a heart issue in women are fatigue, coughing, and a chronic cough. Schwartz, author of the bestselling book, "The Hormone Solution," said a healthy lifestyle can ward off problems associated with aging.

"We're all going to die. None of us are going to be saved, but it's how we live today … to eat right, to exercise, to sleep, to deal with stress properly, and not to kill ourselves in the process to enjoy our lives," she said.
