Tom DeLay: New Embassy Sends 'Incredibly Strong Message'

(Newsmax TV's "America Talks Live")

The historic opening of the new U.S. embassy in Jerusalem, despite a day of deadly violence along the Israel-Gaza border, shows America's unwavering commitment to push for peace to the Middle East, former Republican House Majority Leader Tom DeLay told Newsmax TV on Monday.

"Yes we are having violence [Monday], but we are sending an incredibly strong message to the Palestinians as well as those who hate Israel that there's a new reality," DeLay told hosts Miranda Khan and John Cardillo on "America Talks Live."

"And the new reality is you have to stop trying to destroy Israel, you've got to back off your position that Israel should not be a Jewish state, and negotiate from that. Otherwise, there's never going to be peace."

‚ÄčThe new embassy marks the first official recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel in the Jewish state's 70-year history. But just 45 miles away, violence exploded along the Israel-Gaza border with more than 50 Palestinians killed.

"The Palestinians have undermined peace for the 70 years Israel has been a state and they have been the purveyors against peace all this time," DeLay said. "We finally have to realize that and develop a new peace process based on the Palestinians learning to live with Israel."

He added President Donald Trump has "gone a long way" in putting together a coalition in the Middle East – including Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Emirates, and others – with Israel as "an equal partner" in the group.

"That is huge. If you want peace in Israel and peace in the region, that's how you're going to get it," DeLay said.
