Doctor: Global Response to Ebola Underway, but US Must Lead

By    |   Thursday, 18 September 2014 06:34 PM

Doctors and medical missionaries from around the world are already at work in West African countries besieged by Ebola, but the United States will be the country to lead the world's efforts to halt the spread of the killer disease, a California emergency care physician told Newsmax TV on Thursday.

Patricia Salber, an author and the host of the online radio program and podcast, "The Doctor Weighs In," told Ed Berliner of "MidPoint" that the U.S. military contingent heading to the region is "sorely needed right now" for the expertise in logistics and coordination it will bring to an increasingly global response to the outbreak.

Salber said the military's role could also include helping to enforce large-scale population quarantines — even if it's unavoidably true that "people will find a way to get out," she said.

Salber described the news from the front lines of the scourge as alternately alarming and heartening: a black market for Ebola survivors' blood and, on the other hand, the second trial of a potential Ebola vaccine.

She said that chaotic conditions on the ground in stricken countries — Liberia, Guinea, Sierra Leone — have prompted world leaders to view Ebola as more than just a medical crisis.

"This is considered a security issue," said Salber.
