Joe Pitts: US Must Get Tougher on Ebola

By    |   Tuesday, 07 October 2014 07:10 PM EDT

Rep. Joe Pitts, chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health, has a no-nonsense message for the Obama administration: Get tougher on fighting the Ebola virus!

"I have confidence in what they are doing. They need to do a little bit more," Pitts, a Pennsylvania Republican, said Tuesday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"They need to do a better job of communicating to our nurses and hospitals, in-take workers on standard protocol.

"They need to be more aggressive in screening the people who want to come from West Africa, in West Africa, and screening them after they're here. So there's more that we can do."

Still, he added, the White House "has stepped up to the plate and all hands are on deck now."

"They're going to send 3,000 to 4,000 military types … to help logistically to build clinics. Most of the clinics in some of these countries don't even have running water. Build clinics, build small hospitals," he said.

Pitts said efforts to keep Ebola-infected people out of the United States must be stepped up.

"That has to be much more aggressive because some people will falsify in order to get to the United States, because they feel if they get to the United States, they'll live. So they need to be more aggressive," he said.

"I don't know if it should be completely banned but there might be some time between when they apply to come, that there's some kind of an observation period and quarantine with much stricter surveillance."
