Rep. Byron Donalds of Florida implored the U.S. Senate on Friday to derail any way possible two Democrat bills, the first seeking to spend $1.9 trillion and another revamping election laws, telling Newsmax TV that the first ''lacks complete common sense'' while the latter was a "disaster," "ridiculous" and "stupid."
The 42-year-old Republican freshman, who represents Florida’s 19th Congressional District along the state’s southwest Gulf Coast, excoriated both measures, which passed the House on virtually party line votes and are now before the Senate.
He said on ''American Agenda'' that he hoped the Republicans in the Senate would ''do everything they can to put common sense things into this bill, into a bill that lacks complete common sense.''
Donalds said the economy already was recovering, especially in states such as Florida, Texas, South Carolina and others that imposed restrictions relatively sparingly to mitigate the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19. Therefore, there was no justification for a nearly $2 trillion bill, promoted as a stimulus/relief to lessen the impact of the novel coronavirus.
''There’s really no need to do this massive stimulus, grab bag package, that the Democrats could never pass under normal circumstances,'' he said. ''There isn’t any need.''
He said money for personal protection equipment, unemployment compensation for those who lost their jobs, and vaccines was reasonable.
''But that’s only about 10-20% of this bill,'' he said. ''The rest of it is just craziness, frankly.''
He also deplored the Democrat bill's changing election laws, prohibiting states from requiring identification to vote, insisting they expand voter rolls by using state databases, and also matching campaign funds by providing $6 for every $1 raised from contributions under a certain threshold.
''It’s a disaster. It’s a ridiculous bill. It’s stupid,'' Donalds said. ''It’s essentially taking California’s election laws and making it the election law in the other 49 states. As somebody who’s served in the Florida House, and represents a congressional district from Florida, I don’t want California’s election law. I definitely don’t want (House Speaker) Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) designing them.''
