Dick Morris: Obama Seeks to Reclassify Illegals as Refugees

By    |   Wednesday, 24 Jun 2015 09:24 PM

The Obama administration's plans to cut back on long-term detention for illegal immigrant families with children while speeding up how they are processed at detention centers is nothing more than the White House's effort to "recategory all the illegals coming in as asylum seekers," longtime political consultant Dick Morris told Newsmax TV on Wednesday.

"By categorizing them as refugees, the United Nations has a formula for refugees under which they could require us to admit those folks if they find that they're fleeing political or other prosecution," Morris told "Newsmax Prime" host J.D. Hayworth.

Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson said that fewer illegals are coming across the U.S. border from Central America now than last year, but the numbers are still high.

"I have reached the conclusion that we must make substantial changes in our detention practices with respect to families with children," Johnson said. "In short, once a family has established eligibility for asylum or other relief under our laws, long-term detention is an inefficient use of our resources and should be discontinued."

Johnson added that the new policy would also allow for families to be released on bond, at levels that are "reasonable and realistic."

However, Morris told Newsmax that the "asylum" designation plays heavily in the legislation the Senate approved to give President Barack Obama fast-track trade negotiation authority with foreign governments.

He cited WikiLeaks' release of a portion of the 12-nation pact Obama is negotiating with Pacific Rim countries.

"Right there in section five it says that no nation may stop a company from transferring its workers from one signatory country to the other," Morris said. "If Sheraton Hotels wants to take all of its Eastern European busboys and waiters and waitresses and everything and move them to the United States, it doesn't have to pay comparable wages. It doesn't have to say there's nobody else who can fill the job.

"This says: 'Bring them over here, pay them less than an American, take away the job — and Congress has no power to limit it,' he added. "It's on the basis of this that Ted Cruz flipped on this issue and voted against 'fast-track.' "

Senator Cruz, who is seeking the 2016 Republican presidential nomination, was among five GOP senators who voted against giving Obama fast-track authority.

Morris, a Newsmax contributor who served in the Clinton White House, then turned his attention to the presidential sweepstakes. He also is the author, with Eileen McGann, of the best-selling book, "Power Grab: Obama's Dangerous Plan for a One-Party Nation."

He denounced first-time candidate and retired pediatric neurosurgeon Ben Carson's candidacy because "I don't think that running against Hillary Clinton is a good place to get experience."

"In your first heavyweight fight, you don't go up against Muhammad Ali," Morris added. "You go up against one or two lesser people and you tune up for that."

The consultant said that Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, who became the 13th candidate on Wednesday, was "waiting for lightning to strike.

"Everybody's looking back to 2008 when Mike Huckabee was at 'point, point, point, zero, zero, zero' for some of the vote — and he went on the debate and wowed everybody, and all of a sudden got into contention and finished second in the nominating process to [Massachusetts Gov. Mitt] Romney.

"That's in a sense what people were looking for with McCain," he added, referring to the Arizona Sen. John McCain, the 2008 Republican nominee. "That, in a sense, is what people are looking for here."

Jindal may well be eyeing the No. 2 slot on the ticket, Morris told Hayworth.

"A lot of people are," he said. "If you don't announce your candidacy for president with 16 others running, who the hell are you?"
