Donald Trump is setting the tone for the campaign because he continues to define himself as controversies arise, presidential historian Craig Shirley told Newsmax TV on Wednesday.

"He put the media to shame for trying to suggest that he wasn't being forthcoming about the money raised or the money being dispersed" for veterans, Shirley told host John Bachman on "The Hard Line" in an interview.

"There's a belief in this country that there's a media royalty that has gotten out of control in Washington and New York — and he put them in their place.

"He is smart. He is so smart in so many ways.

"He defines himself by being anti-Jeb Bush," Shirley continued. "He defines himself by being anti-Scott Walker, by being anti this candidate, anti-Ted Cruz.

"He keeps defining himself — and now he's defining himself by being anti-Washington, but more specifically anti-liberal big media, and that only serves his purpose."
