President Donald Trump gave a speech Tuesday night to Congress "that most people believed that he was not capable of making," former House Intelligence Committee Chairman Pete Hoekstra told Newsmax TV.
"The president did a phenomenal job," Hoekstra, who represented Michigan as a Republican from 1993 to 2007, said.
"He stayed on message. He didn't relive history — the election, the crowd size, the electoral win.
"It was inspiring in that he was talking about the future.
"In many places, it was surprising because he was talking about things you would think that Republicans and Democrats could both applaud," Hoekstra said.
"The president laid out a number of things that both Republicans and Democrats can work together on."
