President Donald Trump, with his tough trade talk and tightening tariffs against China, shows his administration is the first in decades which has decided it would not be merely "managing American decline," Asian affairs expert Gordon Chang told Newsmax TV.
"I think we're gonna see years and maybe even decades of really tense relations with Beijing, and I give the Trump administration really high marks for its China policies over the last several months," Chang told "America Talks Live."
"There are things that China is doing which cause trouble and we've had a succession of presidents both Republicans and Democrats who've given the Chinese essentially a free pass to do things which are destructive. What we have in President Trump is someone is saying, 'No, I'm not accepting this' . . . we've also had a succession of presidents at least two of the three and maybe all three of President Trump's predecessors who were just merely trying to manage American decline."

Whether it is sanctions, trade, spying, or theft of intellectual property, China just has not lived up to its "promises," and President Trump is the first president to have the guts to hold them accountable, Chang told hosts John Cardillo and Dr. Gina Loudon.
"You know we gotta understand that there's no point in coming to agreements with the Chinese," Chang added. "You just got club them over the head and hope at some point that they move in the right direction."
