Bill Kristol: Hillary's Trek to Iowa in a Van 'Weird'

Tuesday, 14 April 2015 03:24 PM

Bill Kristol, founder and editor of The Weekly Standard, says Hillary Clinton's journey by van from New York to Iowa is "weird" and unlikely to resonate with Americans.

"Are people going to look at that and think, 'Oh, that's great, she's just mixing and mingling with the peasants out there,' that just shows how much in touch she is with the rest of us?" Kristol said Tuesday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"It's also kind of just weird. She goes to Chipotle with her aide and they have sunglasses on and they just buy their burrito and don't talk to anyone."

He was referring to a video of Clinton standing with Huma Abedin, her longtime aide who's vice chairwoman of her campaign, as they waited for their food at the suburban Toledo, Ohio, eatery.

It's the former secretary of state's first campaign swing since announcing her candidacy on Sunday — a trip in which she plans to listen to "everyday Americans."

"I keep saying if she wants to be like a regular American she should get on the plane in La Guardia [Airport], sit in 25E or whatever and have a delayed flight out to Des Moines like the rest of us do instead of having the Secret Service drive her out there in a sort of weird, quite expensive van," Kristol said.

"It's a $60,000 plus van with, of course, a bed in the back and a big TV and sort of all set up for someone like Secretary Clinton."

Kristol said he was impressed by Sen. Marco Rubio's speech "from the heart" on Monday during which the Florida Republican announced he is running for the 2016 GOP presidential nomination.

Rubio is the third Republican to jump into the race following Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky and Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas.

"Rand Paul had a little bit of a shaky launch, but I'd say Cruz and Rubio, you look at those two, you watch those two speeches, and you got to think, 'Gee, the Republican Party's future is not that bad,'" Kristol said.
