McCaughey: Obama, not 'Loudmouth Gruber,' Belongs in Hot Seat

President Barack Obama, not Obamacare architect Jonathan Gruber, is the person who should be held accountable for the problem-plagued healthcare law, health policy expert Betsy McCaughey said Tuesday on "America’s Forum" on Newsmax TV.

"Jonathan Gruber is not the person who should be on the hot seat," McCaughey said. "He's merely an accessory. The strategy of lying to ram this bill through Congress belongs to the president. Obama lied while he was a candidate campaigning in 2008 promising that he, unlike his primary opponents, John Edwards and Hillary Clinton, would never force Americans to buy health insurance. Yet, that is what his law does.

"Pretty soon this loudmouth Gruber will be just a relic of the historic wastebasket of rogues, but the Obama administration continues to lie about their health law."

Gruber, an MIT economist who is the law’s chief architect and technical consultant, has said the president’s signature piece of legislation relied on American’s stupidity to get passed.

"The law was written in a tortured manner in order to shield transparency because 'the stupidity of the American voter' would have killed the law if more people knew what was in it," he has said.

He apologized Tuesday while testifying about his remarks in front of Congress.

McCaughey suggested that the American people should be given a refund for all the money paid to Gruber for his work on the law.

"We should be getting our money back," she said. "He went to the federal government and to the public and said it would lower costs. Then, when he collected an additional six figure fees from several state governments, he said just the opposite that it was going to raise premiums. Gruber has been lying, lying, lying all along and piling the money into his moneybag and the taxpayers should be getting some of this money back, if not all of it."

It should be noted, she added, that Gruber knowingly deceived the public when he said early on that people would only be able to get taxpayer-funded subsidies if they lived in states that established health exchanges.

"He said he was assuming that the federal government would not set up its own exchange," she said. "The fact is, Section 13-21 of this law, says the federal government must set up an exchange. There's another lie, even as he's going down in history as a liar, he's doubling down and lying again."
