Bernie Kerik: Americans Smart Enough to Keep GOP in Power

Bernie Kerik: Americans Smart Enough to Keep GOP in Power
(Newsmax TV's "Newsmax Now")

President Donald Trump's accomplishments will help prevent Republicans from losing their House majority in the November elections, former NYPD commissioner Bernie Kerik told Newsmax TV.

Kerik was on Monday night's "Newsmax Now" and pointed to some of the positives that have come out of Trump's nearly 16 months in office.

"You have the lowest unemployment in the black community," Kerik said during a panel discussion. "The lowest unemployment in Hispanic community. More people are working."

The former lawman then argued stories such as the Stormy Daniels saga and the ongoing Russia probe, which is looking at whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russia, will not have an impact on American voters.

"You know, the American people aren't stupid," Kerik said. "As far as the Russia probe goes, we have to be morons if we're now almost a year into this and they've found no Russian collusion.

"You gotta be an idiot to think it's out there. Get on with it, and I think the American people know that. And I think that's why you're gonna see they're not gonna take all these House seats that they thought they were gonna take in the beginning."

Trump's approval rating is on the rise, with a recent Gallup poll putting the figure at 42 percent — his highest weekly average in a year. There has been some concern among GOP lawmakers that their majorities in the House and Senate could be in jeopardy, although a report Monday claimed that feeling could be overstated because of Trump's increasing popularity.

The GOP controls the Senate by two seats, while Democrats have to pick up 26 seats to win the House majority. In private, Trump has expressed his belief the GOP will survive the midterms and stay in control.
