David Oliver: Ashton Carter Is Ideal Choice for Defense

By    |   Friday, 05 December 2014 12:00 PM

Ashton Carter, President Barack Obama’s nominee for secretary of defense, is "a really good person to have in there right now," according to Rear Adm. David Oliver, who appeared on "America’s Forum" Friday during the live nomination ceremony.

"There are essentially four big jobs at the Pentagon," Oliver told the Newsmax TV program. "He's had two of them and he supervised all four. He is a man with a technical expertise to do what the president wants done at the Pentagon."

Oliver characterized Carter as friendly and reserved and a "very principled and independent person" who will voice his opinions and try to build a consensus.

Oliver is the author of "Against the Tide: Rickover's Leadership Principles and the Rise of the Nuclear Navy."

"When he walks into a room, he brings people together," Oliver said. "He does better than frankly anyone in finding ways to bring a room together and bring disparate parts, finding what they can/can't agree on so you can move forward ...

"As you know, that's a tough thing that people have to do in this town and we've had problems lately in finding common ground to move forward on. Ash will be a strong player in this."

Carter struck all the right notes during his remarks Friday morning, Oliver said, pointing to his having spoken to the president and acknowledging that his future is in the hands of the Senate.

"Those are the careful notes that you do if you've been around the Pentagon and Washington as long as Ash has and as you have, J.D." said Oliver. "We both know those are the notes you have to sound. He notes he and Stephanie's love of the men and women in uniform and they're all cautious notes and also notes that these are perilous times.

"Those are all the right tones."

A Yale graduate and Rhodes Scholar with a degree in theoretical physics from Oxford, Carter is highly "competent," Oliver said, and with the president’s backing has "the chance to do good things for America."
