Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic told Newsmax on Wednesday ahead of his address to the United Nations General Assembly that an upcoming Holocaust memorial remembrance center will "revive" and "renew the truth" about the Holocaust.
Vucic, who himself lost family members during the Holocaust, remarked on recent comments by Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi in which he expressed doubts about the Holocaust. Vucic said: "The Serbian people and the Serbian state, we are very close friends of the Jewish people, and we believe that not only that the Holocaust happened … we have proof on our own territory."
He added, "I also believe that crimes and atrocities that were committed against the truth, against the Jewish people, during the Second World War are not only unforgettable but unforgivable as well."
Vucic went on to note that "there was a big concentration camp on the territory of the independent state of Croatia, which was a Nazi pocket state during the Second World War."
Vucic noted that while visiting the site of the memorial, he met a woman who thanked him for the decision and told him that her father was killed there along with thousands of other Jews, and said that now people will know about what happened.
"I'm proud that we were able to revive and to renew the truth for the Serbian people and for the world as well, and this is going to be really a magnificent place," he said.
