Alan Dershowitz: AG Going after Trump Foundation Has 'Incredible Integrity'

The Donald J. Trump Foundation is calling out the lawsuit against it by New York's attorney general as "politics at its very worst" – but renowned civil rights attorney Alan Dershowitz isn't buying that argument based on his high esteem for the prosecutor.

On Thursday, New York's Attorney General Barbara Underwood filed a suit that said President Trump used the charitable foundation to settle personal business disputes and ramp up his political image with donations that his staff directed.

The foundation countered that previous Attorney General Eric Schneiderman had attacked it for political fundraising purposes and that Underwood was continuing the political assaults.

Dershowitz, a Harvard Law professor emeritus, told Newsmax TV's "America Talks Live" that while he could not comment on the specifics of the case against the foundation, Underwood's reputation for honesty and integrity is untarnished.

"I've known Barbara Underwood for more than 40 years. She's a woman of incredible integrity and commitment," Dershowitz told hosts Miranda Khan, John Cardillo and Gina Loudon.

"Yes, of course, like so many others in New York, she might be a Democrat rather than a Republican. But I've never known her to be influenced by her party. If she's [filed suit], I have a lot of confidence she has the legal basis."

The foundation "was little more than a checkbook for payments from Mr. Trump or his businesses to nonprofits, regardless of their purpose or legality," Underwood said as she sued to dissolve the foundation and seek $2.8 million in restitution.

Dershowitz said he wouldn't be surprised if Underwood also began looking into the workings of other charitable foundations, including the Clinton Foundation.

Dershowitz is the author of the upcoming book, "The Case Against Impeaching Trump," to be published July 10 by Hot Books, an imprint of Skyhorse.
