By    |   Thursday, 07 August 2014 06:27 PM EDT

In light of the recent shooting of Major Gen. Harold Greene on an American base in Afghanistan, the United States needs to reconsider its decision to withdraw from the country, says former CIA operative Gary Berntsen.

"The United States and the policymakers in Washington will recognize that the group of people they just cut a deal with will release five of the leading members of the Taliban, yet they sponsored someone who murders an officer who was on the ground in Afghanistan," Berntsen told Ed Berliner on "MidPoint" on Newsmax TV Thursday.

"The Taliban are going to continue working against us," he explained. "The United States needs to rethink its withdrawal from Afghanistan and hopefully in light of what's occurred in Iraq, we will slow this process down and we will need greater numbers of people on the ground there to influence events."

"Not necessarily to fight, but to influence events," he added.
