Nearly half of the voters surveyed said they do not trust mainstream media compared to four years ago, according to the latest Zogby poll.
The "Big 6" mainstream media outlets: The three major networks, plus newspapers of record — The New York Times, The Washington Post, the LA Times.
The results, according to Zogby:
- 48 percent overall find mainstream media not trustworthy
- 45 percent overall find those outlets some level of trustworthy
- 7 percent are unsure
- 52 percent of men find media untrustworthy; 43 percent trust
- 47 percent of women do trust media; 44 percent do not
Along party lines, 69 percent of Republicans do not trust mainstream media, and two-thirds of Democrats find them trustworthy, according to Zogby.
"It's no secret that since Donald Trump ascended to the presidency, he has gone to war with the mainstream media. He has been critical of their coverage of his candidacy and presidency," Zogby wrote in its analysis.
"But what is obvious is the erosion in trust of the mainstream media, which did not happen when Trump announced his candidacy. People have been turning away from major newspapers and network news for years," Zogby wrote.
Zogby Analytics conducted the survey of 1,514 likely voters in the U.S. There are 682 likely Democratic Primary voters and 569 likely Republican primary voters in this survey. Based on a confidence interval of 95 percent, the margin of error is 2.5 percentage points.
