LIGNET: Al-Qaida's Base Is Shifting to Yemen

The Yemen-based group Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) has grown much stronger in just the last year, building new bombs and sharpening its focus. AQAP, says renowned terror expert Peter Neumann, is now the leading al-Qaida franchise in the world, and is slowly shifting al-Qaida’s center of power to Yemen, where it has been able to create areas of sanctuary and build support among the people. Its tactics make it harder for the West to detect the threat from AQAP, which is maybe greater than the threat it faced from al-Qaida under Osama bin Laden.
