Thousands of women have contacted a left-leaning group and expressed their interest at running for office since President Donald Trump was elected.

BuzzFeed News reports that Emily's List is rapidly expanding its Washington, D.C. office. The organization has received messages from more than 16,000 women in the last nine months, a massive increase from its previous high of 920 women between 2015 and 2016.

"This is it," Emily's List president Stephanie Schriock told BuzzFeed. "I almost feel like we've been practicing for three decades for this moment."

The group's website lists its mission as helping "elect pro-choice Democratic women to office."

On the heels of Hillary Clinton's loss in last fall's presidential election, the organization is seeing a massive influx of potential political candidates reaching out. The group's Washington, D.C. headquarters is expanding, as are its state and local teams.

Emily's List is throwing its support behind more than 40 candidates for office at the moment, a mix of newcomers to the political game and as well as to veterans.

"These are not women who are waking up and saying, 'I'm running for the U.S. Senate today.' They're not men," Schriock told BuzzFeed. "They just wake up and want to run for president. That's what they do."

Linda Sarsour, a co-chair of the Women's March against Trump, recently called for a "jihad" against the president during a speech to the Islamic Society of North America.

And in a recent interview, Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards said Trump's White House is bad for women.
