A White Texas police officer was found guilty Tuesday of murder after he shot into a car carrying black teenagers, killing one, the Dallas Morning News reports.
Roy Oliver was on trial for the murder of high school freshman Jordan Edwards and two charges of aggravated assault. Jurors deliberated for two days and were divided on whether the former Balch Springs police officer was justified in using deadly force, but ultimately decided he was guilty.
Oliver and his partner, officer Tyler Gross, were responding to a call about a house party in April of last year when they heard gunshots nearby. The officers ran from the house and toward the nursing home and Oliver, who had picked up his patrol rifle, shot into a Chevrolet Impala that Jordan was in five times because he said he thought it was going to hit his partner. Edwards, 15, was in the passenger seat.
Gross, he testified last week, had unholstered his gun and was ordering the car to stop. Gross said he didn’t think the car was trying to hit him.
"I was in fear that the vehicle was close to me, but not in fear that the vehicle was trying to run me over," he testified.
Jordan’s mother, Charmain, told the Dallas Morning News her family, "will never be the same."
'It’s hard walking past his room, knowing I can’t go in there and fuss at him to get up," she said. "Our family will never be the same; the kids will never be the same."
