Envelope at White House Mail Room Tests Positive for Cyanide

Authorities are testing a substance they believe to be cyanide that was mailed to the White House this week.

According to a CNN report,  the Secret Service confirmed the substance tentatively tested positive for cyanide and is now being tested again to confirm it is in fact the deadly chemical.

"On Monday 3/16/15, an envelope was received at the White House Mail Screening Facility. Initial Biological testing was negative; however, on 03/17/15, the chemical testing returned a presumptive positive for cyanide," Secret Service spokesman Brian Leary said, reports CNN. "The sample was transported to another facility to confirm the results."

A law enforcement official told CNN there were no injuries or concerns over anyone being exposed to the substance at the mail sorting facility.

The Intercept obtained a law enforcement document about the incident, which says officials are familiar with the person and location listed in the return address. That person, according to The Intercept, has sent several packages to the White House over the years. He has a record with the U.S. Secret Service dating back to 1995.

"An envelope containing an unknown milky substance, in a container wrapped in a plastic bag, received at the White House Mail Screening Facility, tested positive for Cyanide," read the law enforcement document, according to The Intercept.
