Washington State will no longer require drivers to reveal where they were born, a move that comes following a story published in the Seattle Times uncovering the department’s policy of providing photos and driver’s-license applications to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, reports the Huffington Post.

The order was filed Jan. 19 and went into effect Friday.

Washington’s Department of Licensing in the past regularly handed over personal information used by ICE to arrest and deport people. The state is one of 12 in the U.S. that allows unauthorized immigrants to obtain a driver’s license if an applicant provides certain documentation – the District of Columbia also allows immigrants to obtain licenses – and Washington State Gov. Jay Inslee reportedly didn’t understand the extent of the department’s cooperation until the Times questioned it.

Inslee’s spokeswoman Jamie Smith told the Times her office would tell DOL officials to stop, but the Huffington Post said the department had not followed the governor’s executive order.

Inslee last year promised the state wouldn't help federal officials with immigration enforcement despite calls from President Donald Trump to do so.

"We support the Executive Order, but failed to meet the Governor's intent regarding the protection of this type of information," DOL Director Pat Kohler said in a news release. "We are sorry that our work did not align with our state's values."
