An off-duty police officer shot and killed a man in the nation's capital Wednesday night, the city’s police chief said.
The victim, identified as 24-year-old D’Quan Young of Northeast D.C., was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, D.C. Police Chief Peter Newsham told reporters. The shooting happened around 7 p.m. in the 2300 block of 15th Street Northeast, near the Brentwood Recreation Center, WTOP reported.
Multiple officers were in the area and responded quickly as soon as gunshots were heard.
It’s still unclear what led up to the shooting. Police are talking to the off-duty officer, who wasn't in uniform.
“We don’t know if there was an exchange of gunfire," Newsham said. "We just have no idea at this point,” he said.
Police recovered a firearm from the victim “in the vicinity” of where the victim was picked up by medical personnel, he said.
“We’re still trying to piece together exactly what happened,” Newsham said.
