Va. GOP Appeals to Supreme Court to Purge Noncitizen Voter Rolls

By    |   Monday, 28 October 2024 08:17 PM EDT

Republican officials have requested the Supreme Court lift a lower-court order in Virginia blocking the removal of noncitizens from voter rolls.

On Monday, Attorney General Jason Miyares filed a stay to prevent Virginia from having to comply with the lower court order by Wednesday, which mandates the granting of voter rolls to 1,600 noncitizens. This Wednesday deadline was set following a district court injunction that halted Virginia's program to remove noncitizens from their voter rolls.

Earlier this month, civil rights groups and the Biden-Harris Justice Department filed lawsuits arguing that it is illegal under federal law to weigh in on election laws during the 90-day "quiet period" before a federal election.

Chief Justice John Roberts, who oversees the 4th Circuit, has requested that the DOJ and civil rights groups submit their responses by 3 p.m. on Tuesday, according to Politico.
