Veterans Affairs Secretary David Shulkin said wait times at VA medical facilities throughout the nation are improving. His comments came during an interview on Fox News on Monday, Memorial Day.
"We're focused on wait times," Shulkin said. "And things are getting better around the country. And where there still are wait time problems, we're laser-focused to make sure that no veterans are waiting for care."
He said officials are consulting private industry to develop the best practices to provide "the best care" for veterans by modernizing the VA's systems.
"The problems that we're facing in the VA are really years and years of neglect — sometimes decades. We're running with systems that are 30-40 years old," he said.
Shulkin has said he enjoys the full support of the White House in providing improved care to veterans.
"This president is very accessible to me," he said in an interview with STAT. "He has made it clear to both me and his staff that the issue of veterans and fixing the services for veterans is among his highest priorities."
