A key witness in the investigation into the Department of Veterans Affairs over delays in GI Bill benefit payments has been reassigned after testifying before Congress, NBC News reports.
Robert Worley, the executive director of Education Service of the Veterans Benefits Administration, has been named the executive director of the VBA’s regional branch in Houston, Texas. He testified before the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs on Wednesday, as part of the panel’s inquiry into delayed payments to cover education and housing under the GI Bill, which NBC News reported on Sunday was caused by computer problems in the department.
Sources told NBC that although the VA will likely say that Worley is taking the position to have more time in the field, leading officials in the department chose to reassign him over the delayed payments, among other issues. He was reportedly told that he could chose any VBA regional office he wanted, but he had to vacate his current post.
“It allows him to take a bullet [at the committee hearing] for the undersecretary,” said an unnamed former VA official.
