The United Kingdom reports that immigration from European Union countries is at its lowest level since March 2013, The Guardian reports.
The independent UK statistics institute the Office of National Statistics released data on Monday that showed that net long-term migration to the UK from the EU fell to 101,000 in 2017.
"Net migration has fallen following record levels in 2015 and early 2016, and has been broadly stable since," wrote ONS statistician Nicola White."This is similar to the level recorded in year ending September 2014. Underlying this, immigration has remained broadly stable at around 630,000 and emigration has shown a gradual increase since 2015 and is currently around 350,000."
Although this is the lowest level in four years, it’s far short of the government’s pledge to cut net migration down to "the tens of thousands," as Prime Minister Theresa May pledged in May of last year, according to the Guardian.
"As this data shows, the government’s net migration target is utterly misconceived," Diane Abbott, the shadow home secretary, told the newspaper. "It has never been met and the government’s most recent efforts to meet it led to the Windrush scandal, and deporting our own citizens.
"Like the 'hostile environment,' it’s clear to almost everyone except Theresa May that the net migration target should go."
