House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., said a resolution from the United Nations Security Council calling on Israel to stop settling in disputed Palestinian territories would diminish peace.
"These stunts at the U.N. serve only one purpose — to defame and delegitimize the democratic State of Israel," Ryan's statement read. "This resolution will undermine peace and mutual cooperation by pushing the parties further away from direct negotiations. The administration should veto it."
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also urged the U.S. to veto the draft resolution, which Egypt circulated. It calls on Israel to stop settlements in disputed Palestinian territories because they "have no legal validity."
President-elect Donald Trump slammed the resolution, saying on Facebook, "This puts Israel in a very poor negotiating position and is extremely unfair to all Israelis."
