The Trump administration on Monday will announce new sanctions on Russia over the Syrian use of chemical weapons, United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley said Sunday.
In an interview on CBS News' "Face the Nation," Haley said Russia has been standing in the way of UN "investigative mechanisms."
"We had up until this point had six different resolutions [before the UN Security Council] that would have dealt with investigative mechanisms for chemical weapons and Russia had vetoed all of them," she said.
"We felt like we had gone through every diplomatic measure of talking that we could. It was time for action. "
Though military strikes on Russia-backed Syria were the larger consequence, others will follow, she said.
"You will see that Russian sanctions will be coming down," she said, adding that Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin will announce the sanctions on "companies that were dealing with equipment related to [Syrian leader Bashar al-] Assad and chemical weapons used. "
"So I think everyone is going to feel it at this point. I think everyone knows that we sent a strong message and our hope that they listen to it. "
