Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., has told the president that his choice for next Ambassador to the United Nations should be Kelly Craft, the U.S. Ambassador to Canada.
Axios reported on Thursday that McConnell spoke to President Donald Trump to recommend Craft, his fellow Kentucky native and the wife of coal CEO Joe Craft, should take up the position. In 2007, Craft was appointed as an alternate delegate to the UN by former President George W. Bush, focusing on U.S. engagement in Africa.
“The Leader has spoken to the president and recommended Kelly Craft for the position," McConnell spokesperson David Popp told Politico.
Trump nominated State Department Spokesperson Heather Nauert to fill the post vacated by Nikki Haley, but Nauert withdrew from consideration in February. Former candidate for Michigan Senate John James also is reportedly in consideration for the post, as is Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell.
