Echoing the tough talk of President Donald Trump, Chinese diplomats are increasingly punching back on Twitter amid rollercoaster trade talks, human-rights criticism, and Hong Kong protests, Politico reported.
"The Chinese Communist Party sees itself as in a global information war," Sinocism China Newsletter publisher Bill Bishop told Politico. "They feel like their international discourse power is significantly smaller than it should be."
The fact the bold new social media campaign comes on Twitter and in English is likely no coincidence as Trump has used that platform against China for years.
"It appears that some people have been given license to be much more aggressive in ways that one certainly wouldn't have associated with standard Chinese diplomatic practices as of 10 years ago," Human Rights Watch's Sophie Richardson told Politico.
Chinese Foreign Ministry's Lijian Zhao lists himself on Twitter in English as the "voice of China," attacking the U.S. as "unjust," "inhumane," and "hypocritical" and saying "racial discrimination, gun violence, violent law enforcement are chronic diseases deeply rooted in U.S. society," as Politico noted.
"We're going to answer by effectively explaining our position within a framework that's very measured and reasonable, and we'll see how they respond," a senior Trump administration official told Politico.
