Rep. Mike Turner Tuesday questioned President Donald Trump's decision to tweet about his plans to deport millions of undocumented immigrants starting next week and said the president will have to work within the law when carrying out his plan.
"I don't believe we should conduct any policy by tweets, so it's really hard to take tweets themselves and do any analysis of them," the Ohio Republican told CNN's "New Day." "One thing we know, the president of the United States has to enforce the law...we have to look at what laws will be executed and how they'll be executed."
There are no details, said Turner, as that can't be ascertained from a tweet, but there has been broad support of addressing the Dreamer issue.
"This is going to take bipartisan work, and we haven't seen that with (House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's unwillingness," said Turner. "You can't have an open border and have immigration reform."
Turner also discussed the growing situation with Iran and said he believes a call from Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., call for a retaliatory strike from the United States "incredibly premature."
"We already know in the area Iran has been very active through proxies and through, you know, destabilizing actions both through Hezbollah and Syria and Iraq," said Turner. "I think if you look at the escalation of hostilities from Iran, then we need to have a measured response, but Iran needs to know we will protect our allies. This is going to be a heated debate in Congress. Just last week a motion was brought to prohibit (Trump) from taking military action with Iran. It didn't address the issue we have to protect our allies."
