President Donald Trump highlighted the large amount of land the Islamic State (ISIS) has lost this year in a Wednesday evening tweet.
Trump quoted from a recent Washington Examiner story and included a chart that compares the strength of ISIS under his leadership and under former President Barack Obama:
The Examiner story was published Dec. 23.
The statistics show that roughly 1,000 ISIS fighters remain in Iraq and Syria, and they occupy 1,930 square miles — down from the high of 17,500 between September 2014-January 2017 under Obama. The number of coalition bombs dropped on ISIS targets this year (38,993) is more than half of what was dropped during the Obama administration (65,731).
ISIS was defeated in the Iraqi city of Mosul over the summer and, later this year, its de facto capital of Raqqa, Syria.
