Rep. Tom Reed, R-N.Y., said Wednesday if House Democrats want to see six years of President Donald Trump’s tax returns, they’ll probably have to go to court.
In an interview on CNN’s “New Day,” Reed, a member of the House Appropriations Committee, charged “the Democratic chairman of the Ways and Means Committee is going down a political path of weaponizing the tax code for political purposes.”
“I do believe this is going to have to be litigated,” he asserted.
Reed pointed out that although the chairman is legally allowed to ask see tax returns, it’s “for the purposes of tax administration, not for political purposes. That's very clear under the law. That's why this is a question that's going to have to be litigated.”
“If you are using this 6103 provision of law for political purposes it is clear to me that's not what the intent of Congress was,” he added.
Ways and Means Committee head Rep. Richard Neal, D-Mass., has asked the IRS to release Trump’s tax returns from 2013 to 2018 — and Trump on Wednesday said he “won’t do it."
‘You have watched the last two and a half years of the Democratic Party, once this election occurred, was going after the president to remove him from office, impeach him,” Reed argued.
“This is just another step… It's all about impeachment and political.”
“This is not about tax administration,” he added. “This is about political and weaponizing the tax code for political purposes and Americans should be concerned. This is dangerous precedent.”
