President Donald Trump on Thursday again blamed Democrats for the ongoing partial government shutdown, which he said is “strictly politics,” for them.
“The shutdown is only because of the 2020 presidential election,” Trump tweeted Thursday morning. “The Democrats know they can’t win based on all of the achievements of ‘Trump,’ so they are going all out on the desperately needed wall and border security - and presidential harassment. For them, strictly politics!”
The shutdown began almost two weeks ago, leaving hundreds of thousands of federal employees without pay, after House Democrats rejected Trump’s demand for more than $5 billion in funding for his proposed wall on the U.S.-Mexico border.
Trump said at a Cabinet meeting on Wednesday that the shutdown could continue for “a long time,” or it could end “quickly.”
After the meeting, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said he told Trump, “Give me one good reason why you should continue your shutdown,” and that the president “could not give a good answer,” according to Fox News.
